Shortly after Children's Author Lana Schneider rescued Shea-Shea from an animal shelter, she began to realize Shea-Shea wasn't just any ordinary dog.
As Shea-Shea grew, so did her curiosities, which in turn got her into a lot of trouble. Lana decided that she wanted to teach children Pre-K through Second grade about childhood milestone experiences using Shea-Shea's antics as a fun, teachable tool. Yard and neighborhood safety, and going to the doctor's office for the first time are only the first topics covered in the series.
Lana also had a deeper purpose for Shea-Shea Shea-na-ni-gans, which is to help raise awareness of multiculturalism in the United States in ways that small children could relate to and understand. People of a variety of ethnic backgrounds are represented in her books in positive ways.
Later lessons such as "Shea Get's a Puppy", will relate to times when a new baby arrives to the household; "Shea Goes to Daycare", will cover childhood issues of self-esteem, friend making, and understanding racial differences.
Lana has been a guest blogger on www.mygoodparenting.com/?s=shea+shea+sheananigans, and has written an article on multicultural awareness on American Diversity Report. You can also listen to a radio interview with Lana about her first book in the series, "Shea Runs Away".
